They sold my 92 year old father Windows 8 and he can't return it!

My mother drove my elderly father went to Staples to get a new computer. He uses a special screen and keyboard because he has very limited eye site. They sold him a $400 computer and about $400 worth of add on programs and never mentioned that Windows 8 is a touch screen program. He paid for in home set up but their "best technician" left without connecting his printer. I visited the next day and the printer was unplugged. When I called to ask for tech help so I could learn a few program basics they informed me that my dad was confused....not the case...he successfully buys and sells stocks all day... and they refused to offer him any additional help. I asked what we could do to make this computer work for my dad, their reply was "yeah, it's a difficult program but we won't come to his house unless he pays for it again." It was insulting and he had to hire another tech company for assistance. Windows 8 is a nightmare! I own and operate Apple and Windows products and I couldn't help him at all. They saw him coming and took advantage of his age and vulnerability. He explained his special keyboard and screen and they still sold him Windows 8! Now he is stuck with an $800 loss and no where to go. Our family is personally boycotting any further business with Staples. Easy button, seriously???

as a staples lead tech in the denver id like to call complete HORSE**** on this customer... A. my store and my techs pride above else in our ability to make our customers are 100% satisfyed or we will do what it takes to make sure they are, on many occasions we have returned several hundreds of dollars in services or done them for free.. keep in mind to be techs we must go to school and take HOURS of training, as with anyone elses job there is a value to what we do...its not just given out because of age or charity.

B. to say windows 8 is for touch only, and then say you cant operate it is *** moronic.. its so simular to windows 7 its ***.

C. Why would we sucker a 92 year old...WRONG WRONG WRONG.. as lead i have come accross a situation like this and we acutally returned to the home (be noted a 30 minute drive for myself from the store to their home) free of charge, after that they a week later still couldnt get it... at that point i cant take the time to come out and loose business... we cant affor d to help everyone who cries at every moment and we can do it for free... there is a VALUE to service that is due to recivie... do you get you car fixed for free.. do you get you teeth fixed or major surgries for free..NO! VALUE TO SERVICE..

customers like to leave out alot of detials.. get the straight story before you cry online.. at my store we will do everything to make it right.. ive given away over 1000$ in product and services to fix issues...

Patrick Nkk

Windows 8 is not a "touch screen program" you two just don't know how to figure out how to use the operating system. you say you "own and operate those products" well I don't see using an iPhone (aka a *** phone) and a Windows 7 computer making you a genius.

Guest

If he didn't buy a $400 computer but one that included free training then you would have gotten the training.

I'm just going to take a complete shot in the dark at the products he bought

1 computer

1 in home set up

1 replacement plan

The in home set up doesn't include setting up your printer some times the tech may do it anyway but if they do they could get in trouble for it.

Windows 8 is not a touch screen program, does it work with touch screens yes does it require a touch screen no. Do you have much choice No. Many stores don't sell the other OS computers you could probably find one but yea you can look for it if you want. The only one you could possible find is Windows 7 unless you purchase used. Windows vista and older has been discontinued in retail.

Windows 8 uses the same drivers as Windows 7, most peripherals will still work. If they are designed for Windows xp or later then your SOL.

For support with microsoft windows xp support ends in Aug. 4 2014.

What the tech was trying to say was he needs to pay for the training, if he would like to be taught how to use 8 he will have to pay for that training. The basics are all the same I've used it and after hitting 2 buttons found how to get to the screen I wanted, will I install it on any of my computers no, why Windows 7 works fine for me and there is no real use for Windows 8 on a desktop. (Best part of building your own computer is you can buy whatever OS you want that is sold)

Windows 7 is not even carried in the Staples stores and has not done so since the launch of Windows 8 on October 26th.

chances are, this story is either fake or the employee was already helping a customer. a normal person would have asked for the manager if they were denied assistance.

You forgot to mention if you were rude. What people don't understand is the copy area isn't made for while you wait, if possible yes they will but if your rude they can do what they are supposed to and put you into the *** if you want the copy associate to do the job for you simply submit the file online for instore pickup.

Also what people don't realize is if it doesn't open on the computers in self serve 99% of the time it won't open on the computers behind the counter.

Protection plans

Was "sold" the protection plan when purchasing an HP printer because of the term of 2 years of protection as described by Staples salesperson. After reviewing paper work to register plan on line, realized that plan was only for one year, not two. I should have read the terms before purchase and will never buy one of these again. I have owned HP printers in the past and they usually only last about 18 months before they stop working and it costs more to have repaired than it is worth. They are great printers while they work and the extra protection of the 2nd year would have been worthwile.

What you didn't read was that it is 1 year additional to the manufacturers.

Manufacturers warranty = 1yr

Staples Warranty = 1yr

Total Warranty Coverage 2 Years

During the first year if anything happens you must first contact the manufacturer if they cannot fix the unit then call staples and they will take over.

Totally Pissed

Bought a virus protection that was recommended by an employee for a Christmas gift so when Christmas rolled around it wasn't the right one! I tried to return it and they REFUSED! Their excuse is they don't take back returns after 14 days! What the heck is that about? 14 DAYS? Needless to say that was the last straw with Staples! Also the employees appear to be in space! They are always huddled together and when you ask for help they act like you are interuppting them! Ummmm hello it's your job to help the customers! Really?

Anytime I buy something I always check the return policy just in case. You should try the same.

Guest

If you were to turn the receipt over, believe or not, the return policy is stated on the back. It is NOT the companies fault you cannot check to make sure you were buying the right item, in fact, most antivirus on the shelf is the kind that gets activated at the register, so you should have been able to verify you were purchasing the correct version even before getting to the register. Do not blame your lack of ability to read on someone else.

Kerie Hyf

Not like we can do anything about the return policy.

Patrick Nkk

I'm sure you bought it months ago and tried to act like you were returning just a few days later.

Guest

You may want to try Avast anti-virus.

Staples cheated me with a second hand item

Hi bough a Epson Laser printer from Staples, Marathahalli, on 11/11/2012. I came home and while trying to setup the printer to my computer, I was surprised to find a complaint registration form to Epson on 03/10/2012 by one Ms Vandana regarding the printer defect. I cross checked the serial number of the printer I bought and the one mentioned on the complaint registration form, and it proved my theory. I realized that I was fooled by Staples by being given a returned faulty item. To have this double checked, I tried to register my printer in www.epson.co.in which failed because the printer is already registered. Sl No - PD2202**** Model - Mx14 I spoke to Shovik, Store manager @ Staples, Marathahalli, and he said this was not done deliberately. However he said Staples deal with the returned items and sell them at a discounted price. I don't know to what extend he was true, but this is something a reputed retailer should not do. Please find the proof below https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B_IjSf-pkkXDTjk2N2hUVER2ZTg https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B_IjSf-pkkXDeXBQZ1JXMEdjcjA https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B_IjSf-pkkXDV2l1ZGFVclBhLXc Thank you, Calvin.

Refused refund and then lost item

I online ordered 200 small business magnets. When they arrived, most of them were cut incorrectly and to use them would require me to individually use a knife to remove the white margins. I brought the magnets to the Staples, Fernandina Beach store and showed them to salespeople there and they agreed that it was their (Staples) fault. Because the manager was not in I left the magnets with one of the sales people. They said the manager would get back to me. I asked for either my money back or a store credit. I returned to the store a week later - no return call in between - and spoke to an assistant manager who said he would look into it. I registered an online complaint and received a response that Staples would be contacting the store. No replies from the online or local store in the two weeks hence.

Unable to return a gift card

I purchased Barnes and Nobles $50 Gift card when I tried returning it with in 20 minutes with receipt I could not. In fact the manager agreed no one told this sale is final and the print on the gift card center is not readable.

He referred me to the corporate office which never returned my call.

In a shameless admission the manager in fact told me clearly that the notice is posted in a place where no one can read it.

I had to explain I just bought it and and want to change my mind. He refused to help and was very rude.

As a former empolyee, you can not return a gift card at all. Will not allow you to.

It goes for any retailer.

Pretty positive it is law. Something to do with money laundering.

Guest

Every store that sells gift cards have the same return policy when it comes to gift cards none of them are refundable and that's not the stores fault.

Guest

Gift cards cannot be returned. If you read the back of the gift card you would know that.

Plus it is illegal to return gift cards in certain states. You should have checked to see if you wanted it in the first place. Most stores have protection on gift cards so when you pay they activate the card so if they are stolen they can't be used.

That's stupidity on your part. 8)

Guest

At staples the gift cards use a unique barcode, which once scanned the registers activate the card and at that time it is unrefundable.

Guest

Was this a scratch off to reveal pin gift card? As a store manager I would of made an exception and returned the gift card if the scratch off wasn't fussed with. However I would not of returned it as cash I would of issued a store credit.

I work at Staples, so maybe I can give some insight here. First of all, I'm not 100% sure I understand whats happening, because what you typed had some terrible grammar, so it was just difficult to get what the problem was.

So from what I do understand, you bought 2 ink cartridges and 1 of them "exploded" in your printer? Well, I never really hear about the "exploding" but there are sometimes instances of defective cartridges. In case you were not already aware, nearly every product that you buy has some chance of being defective. Its not the way anyone would like it to be but unfortunately thats just how the world works.

A defective product is not Staples' fault. Its not like a Staples employee opened your box of ink and messed with it just to ruin your day-- defective products come in all the time, its just an unfortunate fact of life. Regarding the cashier texting-- your description was very vague so I'm not really sure what to make of it. I would assume that he/she was not sure what to do about the return as the product was opened, so he/she called a manager, and texted in the meantime while he/she was waiting for the manager to get to the register.

This is still not appropriate behavior for any employee, but I highly doubt the cashier was just texting and blatantly ignoring you.

I also highly doubt the manager told you to "go away." I don't really know what else to tell you, except *** happens sometimes, and returning opened ink was a dumb idea in the first place. Oh and you need to practice writing in English if you ever want to make coherent points.

Guest

I really don't see how it would be Staples fault at all. Ink doesn't just explode inside a printer because you bought it from a certain store.

Chances are that the cartridge HP sent in the box was faulty or you put it in wrong. If Staples opened up every box of ink and tried it out you would probably complain about the boxes being open. What are you going to do when the Canon printer breaks down, ony blame Best Buy instead of Canon or yourself? They don't deserve that either.

From the way you typed it sounds like it was your fault. Chances are you are one or more of three things. BSing, old, or you are a first generation American who doesn't know what they are doing with tech a 8 year old can master.

I've seen customers come back into Staples mad because we had to tell them their printer was broken because they shoved the wrong cartridge in it and then they blame us for having so large a variety. True story.

Fremont Hub:Sold faulty 8GB tablet in a 16GB box!!

Sold me a 8GB non working Google Nexus tablet in a 16GB box. When I tried to return it within 1 hour of purchase, they said I subjected the motherboard to water damage , tampered with the connections and returned it back!!! Office of the president is a joke , all service reps are highly frustrated losers , who have no value or respect to talk to their customer. So much for customer service from the office of the president. One particular service rep-Ryan (last name R***something) is particularly the highest frustrated if them all. The store manager at the Fremont hub staples and the Tech Support team are a bunch of college drop out Hippies. They don't understand the essence of Retail and customer service. Made us wait for 2 hours as the manager was happily chatting away on an animated telephonic conversation. Accused me of tampering the device and return it , all in the 1 hour of purchase while it takes 20 mins 1 way for me to drive to the store!!! The product was essentially a damaged or returned and repackaged before reselling it. Paid $225 for a piece of junk. They then asked me to talk to Asus and Google!! If Asus and Google is to manage the show , why do they even retail products they don't manufacture. Therefore, dear all purchase only school notebooks and pens at Staples!!! A $5 loss is manageable as against a $225 or higher loss.

Well, since Staples doesn't sell things like that open box or repackaged, you would have to contact the manufacturer for that one. If the box was factory sealed and you got a damaged item with the wrong capacity, I'd be shocked. If I were taking that return, I would assume you'd bought an 8gb, messed it up, bought a 16 gb and tried to return the 8gb claiming it didn't work.

Guest

If you acted as angry as you're typing in the store I'm sure they weren't going to help. Nothing stopped you from checking it in the store. If you were causing a scene they probably just wanted you to leave. Also how many stores around you only sell the stuff they manufacture? Next time you go to ANY store and get ANYTHING before you buy it ask yourself if that store makes it and see how much stuff you leave with.

That being said I could see how a store could have bad workers and mix up the two and put the wrong one in the box. Most people don't know how many Nexus have actually been returned because they don't work. It's more then average and it's probably why they haven't been sending 16's to my store for weeks, only the 32's.

You must not have worked in retail before. People have gone out to their car and switched working tech for a similar damaged one to get their money back and sell the working one. I've had someone try returning a laptop with a different serial number on the box which I refused only to find out later he got charged for doing a few switcher roos at other stores. Blame the store a little, blame *** human beings more. You got the short end of the stick because of criminals causing problems and most stores will have the same return policy rather then risk losing thousands a day.

Dirty and King....

Thankfully I never had to work at retail stores in sales positions, and working at a huge corporate helps me make so much that I can let go of the Nexus cost. It is not about the loss, it is the values to which a organization and its employees stand.

It was not the store but the office of the president as well that were not ready to take ownership of their issues that shows that Staples is now the way of Circuit City or Enron.

College drop-outs with foul attitudes mess up the company's image.Anyways this has gone to the consumer affairs dept and will be taking it from there. Not sure if I have to say thanks, but ya whatever, thanks anyway.

Sold a used computer

Went into the Pittsfield, Ma Staples to purchase everything needed for setting up a computer after losing mine in a fire. I purchased a laptop assuming it was brand new. When I got home I charged it and opened it to find a male icon with a user name and icon on the screen. It was password protected. In the box I found an itemized list for the man's work and his needs for this laptop I called Staples and they told me they don't have another I'm stock so I would have to wait for one to come in. I called customer service and it was explained to me that it is their policy to resell items returned within 14 days. I explained I intended to purchase a new laptop and not a refurbished item. This constitutes fraud as not inform a customer they are receiving a used article when paying for a new one and at full price. Beware!

They usually resell items purchased if they were sealed and sellable...a lot of people reseal the packages and when they go to do the return they say they just didn't want it and never opened it if the box looks sealed from the factory they simply put it back in inventory. Not sure why people don't just return it and be honest saying I used it and just didn't like it.

well there is this thing called getting out of the house instead of doing your shopping over the phone, lazy piece of ***. for all you know, the store was busy while you were calling.

customers in the store should come first before the *** laying on the couch and calling to find out which computers are on sale. or customers trying to get free tech support over the phone.

Guest

Sure, we answer the phone, but if you are arm chair shopping I'm going to put you on hold and help the customers who are standing in front of me. Once I'm done I'll answer your call and try to help you. If you were standing in front of me needing help and I took a phone call from someone who wants to know how to fix their printer or pricing for an entire shopping list, you'd be pretty angry wouldn't you?

Guest

They probably can't get to the phone cuz their probably dealing with a bunch of other idiots like you. Did you know you are not the only one trying to get help.

Need Photo ID to claim an order for Post cards (plain)

I ordered a couple of packs of Avery printable post cards. Nothing special, just plain blank post cards you can print yourself. I get an email to come pick them up. The order was in my name and our business. My wife (has the same last name) goes to pick them up and they woiuld not give them to her. It had to be the person who ordered them and no one else....REALLY, for a simple pack of fricken post cards. Its not like it was a computer or some secret printed forms just plain blank post cards.

Staples...YOU GOT TO BE !@#$%^ KIDDING.

I WILL NEVER - EVER USE THEM AGAIN. YOU CAN .

It doesn't matter if its postcards or a pc, you need to either call up and let them know someone else is picking up the order or go yourself. Your wife may have been able to go pick up the order, and then you could have come in and claimed that she isn't your wife and the item was stolen and you expect a replacement for free.

Now the company is out the $15 you spent on the item. While $15 may not sound like much to you in a company that makes billions of dollars, shrink adds up.

Now, I have given orders to spouses based on the fact that the address on the id matches the contact address, but if you give your business info as contact info, it wont match. The odds of a random person with the same last name coming to pick up your order illegally aren't great, but it could happen.

Like another commenter said, it could be a disgruntled ex, or even a sneaky relative. Policy is policy and sorry, you have to agree to the terms or not do business with that company.

Guest

Not only do I work at Staples, I also order a lot of stuff online from various places. Wal-mart, Target and almost every other store I can think of will make you give a photo ID when picking up your items in store.

You've got to be an *** if you don't think this is a good policy for ANY store to have. I know I sure as *** wouldn't want some of my family members (with the same last name as me) picking up my stuff especially if I've already paid for it.

So you want anyone to be able to pick up your packages, without your permission? Okay.

You're an ***.

you're telling me there's no possibility that someone could have the same last name as you? now you know for next time, put the order under your wife's name.

I get it, and I have had my Husband order items and I went to pick them up but when they see we share the same last name & address they will kindly allow me to take them. If they had not my Husband would have been furious and told them they can keep the post cards and take his business elsewhere.

I could understand the justification if the surnames were different and address on their id different.

It is insulting when legitimate spouses are treated like someone that just walked off the street. I prefer Office Depot.

Free Delivery Justifies Poor Service

My wife wanted to buy me a new office chair so Wednesday we went to Staple in Orkeans, Ontario, Canada where I purchased a chair that was not on sale (over 250.00) so I had it put tgether for another $10.00 and it was supposed to be delivered on Friday between 9:00 and 5:00. You guessed it...they never showed. I called and the person I talked to said it wasn't a problem they could deliver it another day.....I informed them that I already wasted a day waiting and I had no intention to waste another day. The response was..Well the delivery is free!!! SO I guess because its free I should accept that it not dependable. I indicated I would cancel the purchase and get a refund. The response was, OK I don't care....So I returned for a refund. No Doubt it will be a long time before I consider that store!!! Dennis from Orleans

Things must be different in Canada, the US stores don't allow you to deliver a built chair, only to have people come on-site and build it for you (for a much larger fee).

Guest

Staples is a company that will do as you wish..if you threaten to return your product / cancel an order / go somewhere else the response will be you are free to do that. They have no need / want to chase after you for your business.

Staples customer service the worst ever

Bought computer and was supposed to get the much vaunted windows 8. They said I would get an email to upgrade from windows 7. This never happened. They said they would put it on but first a virus would have to be removed. Another 200 bucks gone. Windows 8 is so bad and computer locks up. Took it back and argued to have windows 7 put back on. After nasty arguing they finally said they would put 7 back on but would never see the computer again. Which really meant they didn't want to see me again. Needless to say this is not over and they will see me much more than they could ever dream. I have never been treated so badly as a customer as these know nothing dorks. It is on Staples and some new faces will be seen.

I agree with "some1" completely. You are upset because you didnt like windows 8 so take it up with microsoft.

The fact that they actual re-loaded a copy of Windows 7 shows they went above and beyond. You couldnt understand the navigation with the new windows 8 so you felt the need to blame the staff for your ignorance.

Guest

This is the problem with end users, they no nothing about computers, but are quick to blame the actual repair people that are trained in their job. You don't like the OS, tough not staples problem, don't know how to fill out a rebate even though it's spelled out for you, that's your problem.

Your ignorance is not an excuse to create problems for other people, it's customer's like you that make retail associates not want to help people.

Guest

When you purchased your computer you needed to fill out a rebate, the rebate would give you instructions on where to purchase windows 8 and then a $15 rebate would be given to cover the cost of the OS.

Then it would be your responsibility to install it, they did a re-install of your OS to get rid of the virus and put 8 on instead of windows 7. They did everything they were supposed too, its not their fault you don't like the OS you asked them to put on.

Why must everyone be so negative? His grammar has nothing to do with what happened to him.

He should not be upset that he had to call different places but he should be upset that no one helped him and he paid for the warranty.

It is B. S.

Why does everyone flip out when they get told to call netgear...the warranty staples offers covers you if netgear will not...

call the staples warranty and tell them that you called netgear and that they will charge you to fix the problem.
